The Importance of Foot Stabilization and the Role of Orthotics [Video FAQ]

How custom orthotics help stabilize the feet and arches

Today I want to talk about the importance of stabilization for the feet and how it supports the body.

When patients come in and they’re having problems with their feet:

  • They have pronation.
  • They have difference from left to right.
  • They have knee, hip, back, and pelvic problems.

Many times it’s an imbalance in the feet over time because of improper footwear, walking on hard surfaces, injuries, and chronic standing. It can actually affect the support of the feet and that affects the entire body. So what we do is a computerized biometric scanner of the feet.

Why Foot Stabilization is Critical to Pain Free Living

Why You Should Have Your Feet Scanned with Foot Leveler Technology

foot leveler scanning machineIf you look right down here, this is our foot leveler scanner. This does a laser scan of each of your feet, looking at over 120 different points that determine exactly what’s going on with the stabilization of your feet.

We take this information, and it brings back a scan. The scan shows us exactly what’s going on with you and how we can create a customized orthotic to support not just the feet, but the rest of the body.

Once we’ve done the scan, it comes up here on the computer and it shows your individualized results. So what we should see is a scan like this over here, showing you have good, supportive arches of the feet.

Proper foot stabilization scan results

Many people actually have a loss of normal arch, which we’re seeing here. That’s a pronation of the foot, the outside, the inside. And this totally changes the stresses on the rest of the body: the knees, hips, the pelvis.

Foot pronation shown in scan

We go through and look at the effects. It shows you how it could be potentially affecting your posture. So in this case, based upon the scan, [the foot issues] is putting more stress on the knees, more stress on the hips and on the pelvis.

And if you look here, this shows exactly how the foot should function. You have the plantar vault, which is based upon three arches. Many people think about the arch on the inside, but there’s also an arch on the outside and an arch in the front.

Degrees of Pronation infographic

Those three arches are what makes up the plantar vault and support not just your feet, but the entire body. When we see pronation, what starts to happen is those arches they start to collapse. This can lead to:

  • plantar fasciitis.
  • neuromas (a painful condition, also referred to as a “pinched nerve” or a nerve tumor. It is a benign growth of nerve tissue frequently found between the third and fourth toes).
  • bunions can start to grow.
  • ankle, knees, hip, and pelvic problems.
  • instabilities in the spine.
  • even abnormal curvatures in the spine, like scoliosis can be affected by what’s going on in the feet.

Customized Orthotics Can Restore Your Arches and Reduce Stress on Your Body

What we do is create a customized orthotic that specifically restores the arches and support in your feet and the balance of the rest of the body. When inserted into your shoes, the orthotic helps with gait, takes stress off your spine and your nervous system, helps with our spinal correction process, and takes stress off the feet, the ankles, the knees, the hips, and the rest of the body.

I know I’ve been using these for over a decade now, and I’ve seen amazing results. Many of our patients consistently report that it helps them tremendously when they’re on their feet, doing activities. That it’s helped relieve a lot of the chronic pain that they’ve had and really helps support their care, just by using these in their shoes.

Custom Orthotics Can be Worn in Almost any Shoe

The cool part is that you can take it to any shoe. So no matter what shoe that you’re wearing, you can just take and put the insert in. We even have small ones for you, ladies that like to wear the tight shoes, or even for high heels. We have ones for children, we have ones for sports, ones for work boots. No matter what kind of footwear you’re using, you can take advantage of the amazing technology from these orthotics to really help.

Reasons to Consider a Foot Scan and Custom Orthotics:

  • You are having chronic pain in your feet, ankles, knees, hips or other parts of your body.
  • You’ve noticed that your feet are kind of collapsed in or that one foot is shifted out.
  • You gait is “off”.
  • When you’re on your feet, your feet start to hurt.
  • You have plantar fasciitis or other extremity issues.

Custom orthotics may be something that can significantly help support your care here in the office.
